24 December
It’s the feast day of Adam and Eve.
Above: The Creation of Eve, from the mosaics of the Palatine Chapel, Palermo, Italy. 12th c.
From Genesis 1, the Geneva Bible:
Furthermore God said, Let us make man in our image according to our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heaven, and over the beasts, and over all the earth, and over everything that creepeth and moveth on the earth.
Thus God created the man in his image: in the image of God created he him: he created them male and female.
And God blessed them, and God said to them, Bring forth fruit, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heaven, and over every beast that moveth upon the earth.
And Genesis 2:
Therefore the Lord God caused an heavy sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in stead thereof.
And the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her to the man.
Then the man said, This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called woman, because she was taken out of the man.
Therefore shall man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they shall be one flesh.
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.
